SUMMARY:Exhibition | Her Rights: Money\, Power\, Autonomy
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition | Her Rights: Money\, Power\, Autonomy\nIf we are to accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals\, we need to empower women in the economy and close gender gaps. But progress is unacceptably slow. At the current rate\, it will take over 100 years to achieve global gender equality\, according to World Economic Forum. What could we do better\, and are there any successful examples to learn from? Visit the “Her Rights: Money\, Power\, Autonomy” exhibition between 8 March and 2 April 2024 to be inspired. \nJointly organised by the Consulate General of Sweden in Hong Kong\, HKU Libraries and the HKU Gender Studies programme\, the exhibition underlines the need for action in economic gender equality. By raising six interrelated themes\, the exhibition discusses challenges and opportunities connected to economic gender equality. With timelines\, it also tells the history of Sweden’s gender equality journey through progressive policy and reform\, legal efforts and a strong women’s movement. \nTo kick off the exhibition and to celebrate the International Women’s Day\, you are also invited to the launch event. Please see below the event details: \nDate: 8 March (Fri)\nTime: 12:30-13:30\nVenue: G/F\, Main Library \nContent: Welcome remarks\, student sharing\, launch ceremony; Swedish refreshments are served after the event \nNote: Seats are limited and are on a first-come-first-served basis. \nFor enquiries\, please write to lib111@hku.hk \n♦ Register for the launch event HERE ♦ \n

SUMMARY:Paris Is Burning | Film Screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:  \nParis Is Burning\nFilm Screening and Panel Discussion\n♦ Abstract ♦ \nIn line with Black History Month\, Women’s Month\, and Transgender Day of Visibility\, CCHU9079 Queer Art\, Performance and Cities and CCHU9007 Sexuality and Gender: Diversity and Society are proud to screen this movie live with guest speakers to discuss the film’s impact and influence on today’s globalized society specially the LGBTQIA+ community. \n\n♦ About the Film ♦ \nParis Is Burning is a 1990 American documentary film directed by Jennie Livingston. Filmed in the mid-to-late 1980s\, it chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the African-American\, Latino\, gay\, and transgender communities involved in it. Critics consider the film an invaluable documentary of the end of the “Golden Age” of New York City drag balls and a thoughtful exploration of race\, class\, gender\, and sexuality in America. In 2016\, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant”. \n\n♦ Speakers ♦ \nJennie Livingston\, Director and writer of Paris Is Burning \nJennie Livingston is a groundbreaking filmmaker\, known for lively storytelling\, nuanced character portraits\, and thoughtful explorations of identity\, class\, race\, death\, sex\, and gender.  \nIn addition to directing and producing\, Jennie is a writer\, photographer\, draftsperson\, educator\, and director for hire. At heart\, Jennie’s work is about how people create and re-create ourselves\, about what allows us to survive and flourish. We are\, despite the social worlds we create that constrain us\, more mysterious\, more animal\, more complex\, more noble. Qualities Jennie values in storytelling: wonder\, complexity\, and an understanding of what creates and preserves resilience in communities and individuals. \nWorks as a writer/director include: Paris Is Burning; Who’s the Top?; Through the Ice; Hotheads. Television: consulting producer and director on PoseFX. Projections for live performance: Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters for Elton John. \nCurrently\, Jennie’s working on a first-person hybrid feature\, Earth Camp One about losing five family members in a decade\, about queer identity and queer resilience\, and about walking through the world (and surviving) by invoking the powers of looking and listening. Look and listen for it in 2024. (You’ll laugh\, and it will make you think about your own struggles and choices.) \nKier Joy\, United States Foreign Service Officer \nKier Joy is a United States Foreign Service Officer with experience serving in Brazil and Hong Kong. He joined the Foreign Service in June 2019. Before joining the Foreign Service\, Kier earned a Master of Public Administration from Columbia University. During his time studying\, he also interned as a policy fellow for the United States House of Representatives Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere\, Civilian Security\, Migration and International Economic Policy. Additionally\, he interned at the United States Embassy in Mexico City focusing on human rights. He also holds two bachelor degrees from the University of Georgia in political science and international affairs. \nLa Chiquitta\, Drag Artiste  \nBesides constantly entertaining the followers of Hong Kong nightlife\, La Chiquitta has also graced other stages\, including corporate shows\, private parties\, university lectures and out-of-town appearances. Also considered a regular fixture in the theatre circuit in Hong Kong\, she has essayed several theatrical roles\, the most notable of them\, being Solange in Jean Genet’s The Maids\, produced by RyeT Entertainment in cooperation with the American Community Theater. \nShe officially became Hong Kong’s first recording drag artist when she launched her single\, Tranny in The House\, produced by DJ Stonedog and released under Volume Up Records. It was later followed by Party Responsibly\, which topped the iTunes dance charts for a week after it was released. Having gained media mileage and traction\, she co-produced and presented a reality webseries\, Drag It On: Drag Queens in the Making. She later organised Drag Overdose\, the grand meet-up of professional\, budding\, and one-night-only drag queens of HK\, for the city’s Pink Season in 2011. Every year since then\, her little party has become one of the most anticipated events of the LGBTQ festival. \nIn September of 2012\, La Chiquitta launched her media career as the presenter of the weekly radio segment\, Chiquitta Time\, on RTHK3’s From Top to Bottom. This paved the way for her own radio show with the same station\, The Gaybourhood\, with co-host DJ Stonedog\, which premiered in September of 2013 and ran for two seasons. \nShe wrote a contribution to a coffee table book published in NYC\, was featured in a magazine in SG\, and appeared on TV for a special mini-docu in Manila. Her face constantly pops up in various magazines\, newspapers\, documentaries\, and recently\, as the subject for the locally-filmed music video for Give Me Light by UK-based artist\, Mind Enterprises. Portraits of her taken by prolific photographers\, Tsewhat-Tse (Yale School of Art)\, Laura Simonsen (HK)\, The Gaunts (HK) have been on exhibitions\, photo galleries and art fairs locally and in various places abroad\, the most notable of which\, “The Drag Queen Last Supper” made it to the halls of Art Hamptons in New York. \n  \n♦ Rundown ♦ \n12:30 – 2:00pm |  1st Screening of Paris is Burning \n2:00 – 2:55pm   |  Discussion and Q & A \n2:55 – 3:00pm   |  Closing performance by La Chiquitta \n3:00 – 4:20pm   |  2nd Screening of Paris is Burning  \n  \n♦ Details ♦ \nDate | 28 February 2024 (Wednesday)\nTime | 12:30-4:20pm\nVenue | Rayson Huang Theatre\, Main Campus\, HKU  \nLanguage | English\nEnquiries | genderst@hku.hk  \n\n♦ All are welcome ♦ \n  \nThe event is sponsored by the US Consulate in Hong Kong and Macau\, HKU’s Common Core\, Gender Studies Programme\, and the School of Humanities. \n  \n♦ Register HERE ♦\n

SUMMARY:Christianity and Queerness: Affinities and Their Political Implications
DESCRIPTION:♦♦ VENUE CHANGED TO KK LG1.06 ♦♦ \nChristianity and Queerness: Affinities and Their Political Implications  \n♦ Abstract ♦  \nDespite the protracted opposition between Christianity and queerness\, there exists a fundamental affinity between being queer and being Christian. Vital to both are intimate associations that transcend accidents of biology\, and an interest in the way those intimate relations foster new forms of personal and social transformation. Christian negative theology counsels modesty\, skepticism\, and linguistic discipline in all claims on divinity\, thus placing limits on confident knowingness about human desire. This too finds affinity in queer theory’s commitment to putting established orders into question. I will use these affinities to think about the Janus-faced future of Christianity in East Asia. It can become complicit in compulsory heterosexuality\, reproductive futurism\, heteropatriarchal suppression of gender variation\, and homosocial authoritarianism. Or it can become a challenge to them through Christian truth-telling. \n  \n♦ Speaker ♦ \nPeng Yin is Assistant Professor of Ethics at Boston University\, where he serves as a Core Faculty in Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies. Among his current projects is Queer Unlearning\, exploring how queer experiments in living might help us rethink fundamental moral categories such as kinship\, vulnerability\, play\, fidelity\, bodily change\, and sexual knowledge. \n  \n♦ Details ♦ \nDate | 7 November 2023 (Tuesday)\nTime | 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm\nVenue | ♦♦ KK LG1.06\,♦♦ LG1/F\, K. He has now transformed that traumatic experience into a positive experience and influences other people to combat homophobia. Sam has been an important voice in the LGBTQ movement in US and will also share his experience in activism. \n  \nAbout Sam:\nSam is currently the Head of Advocacy and Government Affairs of the Trevor Project\, an organisation providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ young people under 25. \nBeing a nuclear scientist and queer activist and from helping people to understand the differences in advanced nuclear reactors to the dangerous practices of anti-gay conversion therapy\, Sam has the passion to change the world. This brings him to speak before the United Nations and the US Congress etc. He has also been featured in interviews with TIME\, The Guardian and many others. \n  \nMore about IDAHOT:\nHeld every year on May 17\, IDAHOT draws the attention of policymakers\, opinion leaders\, social movers and shakers\, the general public and the media to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian\, gay\, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people globally. \n  \nThe theme of IDAHOT 2019 is “Biphobia”. From now until May 17\, Pink Alliance will be organizing a series of events to help educate the public and increase their understanding of this issue. By distributing pamphlets\, we wish to promote the understanding of “Bi+Pan” sexuality. By conducting other outreach activities\, including talks on gay conversion therapy by the U.S. queer activist Sam Brinton\, a theatre workshop entitled “The Same\, Not The Same?”\, a photography / art exhibition by local Bi artists\, and school talks on IDAHOT\, we hope to further raise awareness of the prejudice faced by bisexuals in both the general and queer communities. \n  \nDate: Monday 6 May 2019 \nTime: 3:00pm – 4:30pm \nVenue: Rm4.36\, 4/F\, Run Run Shaw Tower\, Centennial Campus\, HKU \nAll are welcome.
