DESCRIPTION:NEXT GENERATION LEADERSHIP SERIES 2023/2024\nLanguage Shaping Meaning: The Importance of Inclusive Language In and Out of the Workplace\n♦ Abstract ♦ \nFrom understanding the reasons behind using pronouns to learning about the oppressive or empowering effects of language\, this exciting panel brings together a group that will share with you how language shapes meaning and narratives in and out of the workplace. Whether you are a student\, a DEI (Diversity-Equitability-Inclusion) practitioner\, an LGBTQI ally\, or something else\, it is important to understand how workplace and everyday language can create social divide and discrimination. Learn about how communities are reshaping words and language that cares and speaks with an intersectional lens. \n\n♦ Panellists ♦ \nBrenda Alegre\, Lecturer\, Gender Studies Programme\, HKU \nBrenda teaches in the Gender Studies program of The University of Hong Kong. She has a BS\, MA & PhD in Psychology. Her research work and publications are mostly on exploring the trans identities using interdisciplinary approaches. She was on the Executive board of ILGA Asia (2019 to 2022) and ILGA world (2015 to 2019) and currently the Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines. She’s a mentor to Migrant Workers groups in Hong Kong. She delivered a statement in 2018 at the United Nations on Transgender Advocacy week and won the Hong Kong LGBTQ plus Public Champion and among the Finalists for AmCham Women of Influence 2023. \nSarah Abramson\, Teaching Assistant\, English Language Teaching Unit\, CUHK \nSarah works at the English Language Teaching Unit of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Their main work is on the English Across the Curriculum Project\, a University wide initiative to help students learn discipline specific English. They are also an active member of the Hong Kong Jewish community and serves on the board of the United Jewish Congregation. Their main research interest is in the ways that colleges and universities can create a more inclusive environment so that all students are able to study\, regardless of disability. \nLiam Mak\, Founder and Chairperson of Quarks      \nLiam graduated from the Higher Diploma in Wine and Beverage Business Management at International Culinary Institute (VTC). His other identity besides his academic background is being the founder and  chairperson and of a registered organisation : “Quarks ( 跨⻘時刻)”. As a full-time student and a part-time advocate\, his passion for educating the public on gender topics and advocating for gender and sexuality minorities are his greatest motivation to run the organization. The experience he gained in his advocacy work also trained him in public speaking\, relational coordination\, mentoring\, communication and leadership skills.
