His works\, including “History of Violence” (Histoire de la violence) and “Who Killed My Father” (Qui a tué mon père)\, confront issues such as homophobia\, violence\, and political neglect. SUMMARY:From Engaging in Public Scholarship to Digital Queers: Information Activism Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:Public scholarship—sharing research with audiences outside of academic settings—has become increasingly necessary to counter the rise of misinformation\, fill gaps from cuts to traditional media\, and increase the reach of important scholarship. Engaging in these efforts often comes with the risk of harassment and threats—especially for women\, people of color\, LGBTQ+ communities\, and precariously employed workers. This presentation\, based on Ketchum’s book Engage in Public Scholarship (Concordia University Press 2022) and her current project “Digital Queers and High Tech Gays: A History of LGBTQ+ Cyber Activism” (under contract with MIT Press) first provides constructive guidance on how to translate research into inclusive public outreach while ensuring that such efforts are safer and more accessible. The beginning of the presentation will discuss practices and planning for a range of activities from in-person and online events\, to publishing and working with the media\, social media activity\, blogging\, podcasting\, cartoons\, and more. While distinct\, public scholarship can be part of a broader move towards information activism. During the second part of the presentation\, Ketchum will historically situate how vital the work of cyber activists engaging in information activism was for LGBTQ+ community organizations from 1980-2002. This presentation will be part workshop and part historical lecture. \nDr. Alex Ketchum (she/her) is an Assistant Professor at McGill University’s Institute for Gender\, Sexuality\, and Feminist Studies (IGSF). She is the Director of the Just Feminist Tech and Scholarship Lab. She is the author of several books including Engage in Public Scholarship!: A Guidebook on Feminist and Accessible Communication\, Ingredients for Revolution: A History of American Feminist Restaurants\, Cafes\, and Coffeehouses\, and the forthcoming “Digital Queers\, and High Tech Gays: A History of LGBTQ+ Cyber Activism.” She is also co-editor of the forthcoming anthology: Queers at the Table: An Illustrated Guide to Queer Food with Recipes\, which will be out in October with Arsenal Pulp Press. SUMMARY:[BOOK TALK] Mourning on the Fringes: My Two Kaddish Years with Hebrew Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nWendy Zierler’s forthcoming book\, Going Out with Knots: My Two Kaddish Years with Hebrew Poetry combines memoir with Hebrew poetry. The book explores Zierler’s personal journey of mourning after losing both her parents in one year. She shares her experiences as a woman reciting the traditional Kaddish prayer in an Orthodox synagogue and discusses her decision to teach a weekly class on modern Hebrew poetry dealing with themes of grief\, prayer\, and struggles with faith. Each chapter of the book focuses on a different modern Hebrew poet\, including Lea Goldberg\, Avraham Halfi\, Yehuda Amichai\, Rachel Morpurgo\, Rachel Bluwstein\, Ruhama Weiss\, and Amir Gilboa. Over the course of her two-year mourning period\, Zierler translated\, interpreted\, and taught their poems\, many of which are presented in English for the first time. \nAbout the Speaker \nWendy Zierler is the Sigmund Falk Professor of Modern Jewish Literature and Feminist Studies at HUC-JIR in New York. From 1996-2001\, she taught English and American Literature and American Studies at HKU. In 2021\, she received rabbinic ordination from Yeshiva Maharat in New York. Her most recent book\, Going Out with Knots: My Two Kaddish / COVID Years with Hebrew Poetry\, will be published by the Jewish Publication Society/University of Nebraska Press in 2025. She is the author of several other books including\, And Rachel Stole the Idols: The Emergence of Modern Hebrew Women’s Writing and Movies and Midrash: Popular Film and Jeiwsh Religious Conversation. \nAbout the Respondent \nMarcia Ellis is the Global Co-Chair of Morrison Foerster’s Private Equity Practice\, a member of the firm’s global board of directors and a member of the firm’s global Environmental\, Social and Governance (ESG) Steering Committee. Critics consider the film an invaluable documentary of the end of the “Golden Age” of New York City drag balls and a thoughtful exploration of race\, class\, gender\, and sexuality in America. In 2016\, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant”. \n\n♦ Speakers ♦ \nJennie Livingston\, Director and writer of Paris Is Burning \nJennie Livingston is a groundbreaking filmmaker\, known for lively storytelling\, nuanced character portraits\, and thoughtful explorations of identity\, class\, race\, death\, sex\, and gender.  \n​In addition to directing and producing\, Jennie is a writer\, photographer\, draftsperson\, educator\, and director for hire. During his time studying\, he also interned as a policy fellow for the United States House of Representatives Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere\, Civilian Security\, Migration and International Economic Policy. He also holds two bachelor degrees from the University of Georgia in political science and international affairs. \nLa Chiquitta\, Drag Artiste  \nBesides constantly entertaining the followers of Hong Kong nightlife\, La Chiquitta has also graced other stages\, including corporate shows\, private parties\, university lectures and out-of-town appearances. Also considered a regular fixture in the theatre circuit in Hong Kong\, she has essayed several theatrical roles\, the most notable of them\, being Solange in Jean Genet’s The Maids\, produced by RyeT Entertainment in cooperation with the American Community Theater. \nShe officially became Hong Kong’s first recording drag artist when she launched her single\, Tranny in The House\, produced by DJ Stonedog and released under Volume Up Records. It was later followed by Party Responsibly\, which topped the iTunes dance charts for a week after it was released. Having gained media mileage and traction\, she co-produced and presented a reality webseries\, Drag It On: Drag Queens in the Making. She later organised Drag Overdose\, the grand meet-up of professional\, budding\, and one-night-only drag queens of HK\, for the city’s Pink Season in 2011. Every year since then\, her little party has become one of the most anticipated events of the LGBTQ festival. \nIn September of 2012\, La Chiquitta launched her media career as the presenter of the weekly radio segment\, Chiquitta Time\, on RTHK3’s From Top to Bottom. This paved the way for her own radio show with the same station\, The Gaybourhood\, with co-host DJ Stonedog\, which premiered in September of 2013 and ran for two seasons. \nShe wrote a contribution to a coffee table book published in NYC\, was featured in a magazine in SG\, and appeared on TV for a special mini-docu in Manila. Her face constantly pops up in various magazines\, newspapers\, documentaries\, and recently\, as the subject for the locally-filmed music video for Give Me Light by UK-based artist\, Mind Enterprises. SUMMARY:Christianity and Queerness: Affinities and Their Political Implications
DESCRIPTION:♦♦ VENUE CHANGED TO KK LG1.06 ♦♦ \nChristianity and Queerness: Affinities and Their Political Implications  \n♦ Abstract ♦  \nDespite the protracted opposition between Christianity and queerness\, there exists a fundamental affinity between being queer and being Christian. Vital to both are intimate associations that transcend accidents of biology\, and an interest in the way those intimate relations foster new forms of personal and social transformation. Christian negative theology counsels modesty\, skepticism\, and linguistic discipline in all claims on divinity\, thus placing limits on confident knowingness about human desire. This too finds affinity in queer theory’s commitment to putting established orders into question. I will use these affinities to think about the Janus-faced future of Christianity in East Asia. It can become complicit in compulsory heterosexuality\, reproductive futurism\, heteropatriarchal suppression of gender variation\, and homosocial authoritarianism. Or it can become a challenge to them through Christian truth-telling. \n  \n♦ Speaker ♦ \nPeng Yin is Assistant Professor of Ethics at Boston University\, where he serves as a Core Faculty in Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies. DESCRIPTION:Conspicuous Feminism on Television:\nGender\, Power and #MeToo\n♦ Abstract ♦  \nIn Conspicuous Feminism on Television: Gender\, Power and #MeToo\, Anna Marie Bautista examines how the impact of the #MeToo movement on the larger cultural discourse has not only prompted a critical scrutiny of gender and power on television but has also leveraged its popularity to commodify both oppressed and independent women. This book delves into how the pervasive misogyny exposed by #MeToo has generated configurations of conspicuous feminism in shows like Big Little Lies\, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel\, Insecure\, and The Handmaid’s Tale. These fictional depictions emphasize feminist themes relating to misogyny and abuse\, the silencing and deceptions that are preserved in order to uphold gendered power relations\, the challenging of established gender roles and identities\, and the integration of intersectional perspectives. Bautista explores how these representations indicate a more complex awareness of systemic misogyny in popular television series than in previous eras\, reflecting the impact of #MeToo’s aims to uncover and confront gendered inequality. Learn about how communities are reshaping words and language that cares and speaks with an intersectional lens. \n\n♦ Panellists ♦ \nBrenda Alegre\, Lecturer\, Gender Studies Programme\, HKU \nBrenda teaches in the Gender Studies program of The University of Hong Kong. She has a BS\, MA & PhD in Psychology. Her research work and publications are mostly on exploring the trans identities using interdisciplinary approaches. She was on the Executive board of ILGA Asia (2019 to 2022) and ILGA world (2015 to 2019) and currently the Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines. She’s a mentor to Migrant Workers groups in Hong Kong. She delivered a statement in 2018 at the United Nations on Transgender Advocacy week and won the Hong Kong LGBTQ plus Public Champion and among the Finalists for AmCham Women of Influence 2023. \nSarah Abramson\, Teaching Assistant\, English Language Teaching Unit\, CUHK \nSarah works at the English Language Teaching Unit of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Their main work is on the English Across the Curriculum Project\, a University wide initiative to help students learn discipline specific English. They are also an active member of the Hong Kong Jewish community and serves on the board of the United Jewish Congregation. Their main research interest is in the ways that colleges and universities can create a more inclusive environment so that all students are able to study\, regardless of disability. \nLiam Mak\, Founder and Chairperson of Quarks      \nLiam graduated from the Higher Diploma in Wine and Beverage Business Management at International Culinary Institute (VTC). His other identity besides his academic background is being the founder and  chairperson and of a registered organisation : “Quarks ( 跨⻘時刻)”. As a full-time student and a part-time advocate\, his passion for educating the public on gender topics and advocating for gender and sexuality minorities are his greatest motivation to run the organization. The film weaves family anecdotes and neighborhood memories to open up critical conversations about liminal states & anti-Blackness in the Chinese community\, and serves to disrupt racial narratives and bridge divides. \nCrystal Kwok – Director\, Producer & Writer\nCrystal Kwok is an award winning filmmaker who established her career in Hong Kong as an actress\, writer\, director\, and talk show host. She won the audience choice awards at the 2000 Deauville Asian Film Festival for her debut feature length film\, The Mistress. This paper will examine the work of contemporary women artists who explore in their practice the theme of an enclosed city and its environment. Women artists’ reconceptions of place can offer new understandings of seeing and experiencing divided cities. According to Meskimmon\, women artists can become a ‘sentient participant in the city’ and they develop in their artist practices negotiations on gender\, space and representation.[1] \nThe ‘flâneur’ concept has been historically associated with a male figure that had the privilege to stroll leisurely around the cities. For women artists in Cyprus\, strolling along the borders of their divided homeland can be seen as a politicised action\, as they enter a domain that has been predominantly controlled by masculinised politics. This paper will focus on the work of women artists who have used the walking body and its movement to re-enact the boundaries that confine the city. In entering the space of the enclosed city and strolling along its borders\, women artists have used sensory strategies to reclaim it. The site-specific interventions offer new perspectives into understanding past histories and create new narratives of belonging. \n[1] Meskimmon\, M. DESCRIPTION:Queer Chinese Feminist Archipelago: Shanghai\, Miami\, and San Francisco\nDate: 31 March 2022 (Thursday)\nTime: 7:30pm\nWebinar Link: https://hku.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_-0hC3rd-RXKtVCXctyqPbQ \nMartinican-born poet and theoretician Édouard Glissant suggests that a shift to “archipelagic thinking” can allow one to see the world metaphorically as a collection of islands connected to each other. Foregrounding the body and affect\, I will consider the exhibition WOMEN 我們\, organized by Abby Chen\, that traveled from Shanghai (2011) to San Francisco (2012) and Miami (2013) through what I refer to as “archipelagic feeling.” WOMEN 我們 explored queer Chinese feminism\, and in a nod to cities where the venues were located\, the curators expanded the checklist at each leg of the tour. In this way\, the curators aimed not to essentialize or center queer Chinese feminism but productively connect it to (for example) Latinx subjectivities and Asian-American feminist concerns. In so doing\, I suggest this exhibition offers a new framework for thinking about the transnational through both queerness and creolization. \nSpeaker: Dr. Alpesh Kantilal Patel \nAlpesh Kantilal Patel is an associate professor of contemporary art at Tyler School of Art and Architecture\, Temple University. His art historical scholarship\, curating\, and criticism reflect his queer\, anti-racist\, and transnational approach to contemporary art. He is the author of the monograph Productive failure: Writing queer transnational South Asian art histories (2017). A co-editor of the anthology Storytellers of Art’s Histories (2022) and special journal issue for Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art (2021)\, he is working on two book projects\, Visual Diaries: Transnational Miami and Multiple and One: Global Queer Art Histories.

All three writers are strongly associated with autobiographical writings and in the case of Xiao and Chang\, their sensational biographies (particularly their love lives) have frequently overshadowed their writing. All three women deployed their literary personae\, but their control over their image was never absolute. Xiao Hong and Agnes Smedley were friends and more importantly\, they circulated each other’s works and literary images. Xiao Hong sees in Smedley’s work a universal feminist struggle. Smedley sees in Xiao Hong a vision of a progressive and particularly Chinese proletarian feminism. For Eileen Chang\, her autobiographical novels remained unpublished until many years after her death because her stark self-revelation was inconsistent with the image of old Shanghai glamor that her earlier fiction had conjured up. \nClara Iwasaki is an assistant professor in the department of East Asian Studies at the University of Alberta.
