Next Generation Leadership is part of a new HKU Gender Studies Programme initiative, Connecting Our Futures, bringing Hong Kong’s academic and professional sectors together to prepare today’s university students to become the next generation of inclusive leaders. Building on HKU’s curricular strengths in gender studies, interdisciplinary approaches to leadership, and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion), we invite students, academics, professionals from various workplaces, and interested community members to join together in conversation and collaboration. This panel discussion explores the potential impact of the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action and higher education admissions policies.

What are the Transpacific resonances and ripple effects in education, industry, and public culture?

Will organizations use the SCOTUS case as an excuse to reduce focus on DEI?

How can individuals committed to equity work together in the face of backlash, highly-charged debates, and divisive media and political landscapes?

What should we know about Hong Kong’s past and present efforts to grapple with individual and institutional difference and disparity at the intersection of gender, race, and ethnicity?

From understanding the reasons behind using pronouns to learning about the oppressive or empowering effects of language, this exciting panel brings together a group that will share with you how language shapes meaning and narratives in and out of the workplace. Whether you are a student, a DEI (Diversity-Equitability-Inclusion) practitioner, an LGBTQI ally, or something else, it is important to understand how workplace and everyday language can create social divide and discrimination. Learn about how communities are reshaping words and language that cares and speaks with an intersectional lens.
